The beauty of this type of landscaping project (or hardscaping project, really) is that you can do walking path that looks very simple and is easy to install in just a couple of hours on your own, or you can design a more complex walkway that requires cutting stones and laying an intricate pattern for a more substantial architectural feature. Or, you can do something in between, of course. Hiring a professional to design and install a walkway can be the perfect option if you want something really beautiful, but don't have the time or capacity to do the labor yourself.
If you're interested in laying a more simple flagstone walkway on your own, check out this video from "This Old House", which is one of my favorites: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/video/0,,1632389,00.html
